Portarlington Speakers
On Tuesday December 2 at the Anvil Inn Donal Deeny enthralled the meeting with a panoramic account of growing up in Jerusalem, the transfer to the fields of Castlebar, and ending up with spirituality and philosophy. Writer Pat Lillis brought all down to earth with a moving account of the Great Famine and how it related to the Fields of Athenry.

Owen Sweeney accelerated through the hedgerows of the North West 200 and the Ulster Grand Prix with the great world champion road racing motorcyclist from Ballymoney Joey Dunlop who kept on winning and winning.

The meeting then skidded to a very enjoyable pit stop with tea, coffee and Cadbury’s heroes, before Noreen Diver stepped up the speed with a splendid selection of topics giving everyone the opportunity for impromptu speaking and Mary Killeen’s compilation of questions emphasized the importance of listening.

Excellent, erudite and energetic evaluations were given by Ann Duncan, Carmel Moore O’Leary and Mark Bastow. Carmel also kept good time with the stop watch and great use of the Speakers equivalent of the chequered flag the famous traffic light cards. Damian Oliver summed up the meeting expertly with recommendations that will make the 2015 meetings even better.

What better way to start 2015 than meeting new friends at the Portarlington Speakers. Our next meeting will be on January 6 2015 at 7.45pm at the Anvil Inn, Portarlington. To join click here
