Active Travel Projects in 2024

What’s planned in 2024 for the active travel infrastructure around Laois

The active travel programme of work as funded by the NTA.

The primary schemes for delivery this year include:

  1. Triogue Way, Portlaoise – Phase 2.

This will run from the Peoples Park to the Linear Park on Greenmill Lane, following the Trigoue river. The initial focus will be on the parks with the route on JFL Ave. and Tower Hill to follow.

  1. Borris Road, Portlaoise

Works to take place this summer and involve reallocating road space for raised cycle tracks. We also plan to upgrade the roundabouts at Borris Rd/Colliers Lane/Ashley Gardens will zebra crossings to be installed at these junctions.

  1. Mountrath Rd, Portlaoise

Works to take place this summer and involve reallocating road space for raised cycle tracks.

  1. Safe Routes to School

Works to cater for safer pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure at Camross NS will take place this year.

  1. Junction tightening works to take place at Brotherton and Heatherhill Square, Graiguecullen. Other locations to be identified in Graiguecullen for similar treatments.

  1. Station Rd & Canal Rd, Portarlington

Works to improve pedestrian connectivity at Canal Rd to take place this year. We are also examining junction tightening works at a number of locations on Station Rd with pedestrian crossings to be considered. These works will facilitate better pedestrian/cyclist access to schools, shops and sports clubs.
